New/Mode's targeting technology goes way beyond contacting political reps. Imagine empowering your community to:
- Click one button to lookup and contact the board of governors of their local universities or colleges to ask them to divest their endowments from fossil fuels.
- Email, call, or Tweet their local Sheriff’s office or Police Commissioner to remind them that Black Lives Matter.
- Immediately connect with a retail chain’s local stores during a lockout and inform them of a boycott until they get back to the bargaining table.
All this is easily accomplished with Advanced Custom Targeting, which allows you to upload a CSV spreadsheet of target data. This data integrates seamlessly with your campaign tools, creating a search bar for supporters to look up the decision-makers that matter to your campaign:
Here's how to use a CSV spreadsheet to upload custom target data:
Step 1: Create a Google Sheet with names and contact information for the targets you would like your supporters to contact. You can use this Google Sheet Template - make a copy and save it to your Google Drive:
(If you get an Access Denied notification, just request access and a member of our support team will get you set up!)
Step 2: Add additional columns for lookup values that your supporters can search to see targets most relevant to them.
For example, if you're targeting the deans of universities,'institution_name' is a no-brainer— many of your supporters may be alumni, so they should be able to search on your form and return the contact information for that president.
Step 3: Publish your custom target spreadsheet to the web as a CSV, then copy the link you generate:
You'll need to find that Publish to Web link under the File tab, and select Comma-seperated values (.csv) on the Publish to Web form before clicking the Publish button. Copy the provided link and you're on your way!
Step 4: Return to the Custom Targets section of your campaign tool's Basic Configuration page, and link your spreadsheet to your campaign tool with the URL you just copied:
Step 5: After clicking the Import button, you'll see some new options appear:
Automatically Update CSV Checkbox
This box should be checked when you are importing a CSV for a new tool. If you ever update or replace the CSV on an existing tool, this box should be checked before you click SAVE on the Basic Configuration page. When this box is checked, an old CSV will be updated to include any new lookup columns or entries. Similarly, if you want to add a new custom CSV URL, it will replace the old CSV when this box is checked.
Provide a Search Bar: This option will automatically create a search bar on your tool that allows your supporters you search based on the lookup values you've included in your CSV. We highly recommend using this option.
Display All Results: This option will create a list of all the contacts in your CSV on the campaign tool. This might be useful if you just have a few targets in there, but don't use it for a long list!
This is a list of the lookup columns that you created in your spreadsheet. Select the ones that you would like your supporters to be able to search by. For example, "jurisdiction," "last name," or "university." In the tool, supporters will now see a search bar that allows them to look up their representatives or relevant organization/institution.
Step 6: Click Save & Next, the go to the View tab to see your new Search bar IRL. So beautiful:
In the future, any changes that you make to your CSV data will automatically update to your campaign tool, so once you're done setting this up, you can control lists of targets and target data from the published spreadsheet. Easy peasy!
